The ORIGINAL devotional book, written as a story. Everyone who loves the Bible should read this book. I've read it many times over, and although "modern language editions" are available, I like the KJV language better (personal preference). There are so many references to Bible teaching and truth in it, many of them oblique, that it is a treasure-trove of wonderful teaching. Nobody has written anything like this, before or since. It used to be required reading in public schools, as an example of the Christian life.John Bunyan himself was a wonderful man who paid a high price for his beliefs, and he deserves a greater place in religious history than he has.

I can hardly put into words how much I loved this book. It was somewhat difficult to read because of the old King James English but so worth it.
This is written in older English so some of it is hard to understand, but if you pay attention to the context you'll get it. It's a wonderful commentary on today's problems and temptations - just as legitimate now as it always was. I'm really glad I finally read it.
I doubt it would be a best-seller if it had been written today,, but because it was written long ago, I understand how it became a "must-read" back then. It still holds interest and if you can overlook the sometimes slightly jerky advancement of the story, it still is a good book. It is mercifully not too long and I was glad I read it.
A must read for believers in Jesus Christ and a great read for everyone. The allegorical aspect of the book is clever and each word is carefully chosen. The story should appeal to everyone due to the cast of characters and the uncertainty of their predicaments. I am retreading it for the third time.
I have this four stars because the story was well told from a Biblical standpoint but withheld the fifth star because of how it is set up. I would have liked it to have some breaks in it that would act as good stopping points such as chapters of segments of the journey.
“As I walk'd through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place, where was a Denn; And I laid me down in that place to sleep And as I slept I dreamed a Dream. I dreamed, and behold I saw a Man cloathed with Raggs, standing in a certain place, with his face from his own House, a Book in his hand, and a great burden upon his Back. [Isa 64.6; Luke 14.33; Psalm 38.4; Hab. 2.2; Act. 16.30,31] I looked and saw him open the Book, and Read therein; and as he read, he wept and trembled and not being able longer to contain, he brake out with a lamentable cry; saying, what shall I do?”
Thus begins Pilgrim’s Progress, the man is named Christian and his question, ”what shall I do”, is our question. His plight is our own. First we must weep, for we all carry a burden of sin, which only the Cross can remove. His walk to Glory is our walk. His adventures warn us of the many snares the enemy will set for us. And most of all, his hope is our hope. Let yourself suspend your 21st century way of viewing things. In order to fully appreciate a work such as this, it is helpful if the reader accepts the reality the author presents, such as the world Lewis creates for us in Narnia, or Middle Earth, by Tolkin. The same approach will greatly assist in the reading of Pilgrims Progress. Bunyan puts the teller of his tale in a dream state, which is appropriate for a walk of faith, for in this world, we do see, “thru a glass darkly”. Walk with Christian. Meet his helpers and his enemies on his road of life. Learn from his mistakes. See yourself in the people he meets. Appreciate the courage that God gives us to fight the good fight. C. S. Lewis, in one of his essays, encourages us to read “old books”. One of his reasons is that old books have passed the test of time. Pilgrims Progress has definitely passed the test of time. That is why, although written in 1568, it has never been out of print and has been printed in over 200 languages.
Very good book, although difficult to read because it is written in a old English, what make it difficult for someone that English is not a first language. With all of that, was a very good book and I will read it again, and now using my Bible to guide me verses by verses. Those Bible verses enriches the story and give to our minds a more profound reading accomplishment. I recommend it to Christians and non Christians to enriched their lives.
