When Rebecca Kauffman's older sister, who left the Amish community when she was a teenager, dies in an automobile accident, Rebecca is left custody of her two modern non-Amish teenage nieces, Jessica and Lindsay. Will she be able to reconcile the two worlds in her home - or will the clash of cultures tear her world, including her marriage, apart?

A Gift of Grace Kauffman Amish Bakery Series (Audible Audio Edition) Amy Clipston Devon O' Day Zondervan Books

I love anything by Amy Clipston. I have read this book twice now and found that I loved it just as much the second time if not even more. This story was really meaningful to me because it showed that sometimes I just need to listen. What might be good for me, might not be the best for everyone else. Rebecca was taught this lesson as she struggled with keeping her worldly nieces in her Amish home. Rebecca wanted them with her because that is what her sister Grace wanted. Rebecca was torn between her nieces, her husband and her Amish community. Rebecca is forced to listen to everyone's needs and found that they were not necessarily what she wanted, but she was able to do what was best for everyone.

A Gift of Grace by Amy Clipston

This book is the first book in Amy Clipston's series, Kauffman Amish Bakery Series.

I have been hearing about this series for quite a while and have heard only the most positive things so I thought it was about time I take a dive into the series myself.

I have to admit, I was not disappointed!

In A Gift of Grace, Rebecca Kauffman has been trying to be a mother for years, with no success. Perhaps God just does not have it in His plans for her, or so she thinks. But when tragedy strikes, Rebecca finds herself suddenly to be a mother.

Rebecca's sisters, who chose to leave the Amish, with whom she has slowly lost contact and had not seen for years, is killed in a horrible car accident along with her English husband. Their two young daughters, therefore, are orphaned, and in the will Rebecca is named their guardian.

Rebecca now has two teenage girls under her roof, girls who are heartbroken and devastated by the loss of their parents, and have anger over being forced to move to Amish country where everything is so different.

All Rebecca wants is to be a good mother. Jessica is particularly resistant, and as Lindsay begins to find herself more comfortable with Amish life, she gets caught in the middle between Jessica and Lindsay. Eventually, the strained relationships cause Rebecca to no longer be on speaking terms with her own husband.

God has sent her these two girls, so how can it be so hard? She was meant to be their mother, right? Rebecca finds herself questioning everything, and hate beginning to build in her heart.

Will Rebecca be able to save her own heart? Will she be able to be the Amish wife and mother she so longs to be? Will Jessica be able to overcome her grief, and adjust to the Amish ways of life? And what of the younger Lindsay who wants to belong with the Amish, but is forced by Jessica to be caught in the middle?

Read A Gift of Grace to find out!

Having never experienced such devastating loss, I cannot even begin to imagine how miserable it might be to lose both your parents in a sudden car crash. And then to be uprooted from a modern world with electricity and pushed into the Amish world with everything feeling foreign and unfamiliar? It would be shocking to even the most resilient of children...

This story, I believe, accurately shows the way a child might react to such pressures and strains. But a lot of the beauty of the story is learning how to listen to God. Rebecca is so sure she is meant to be a mother when she gets these girls in the will, but is she truly listening to God's plan? Or is her own selfish desire to be a mom overpowering her hearing?

I empathize with her, as wanting to be a mother and then being unable would be heartbreaking, and her faith wavering is understandable with all she goes through.

I think it's a beautiful, touching and enjoyable story that can teach us all to truly listen to God and put aside our own wishes.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
Both Lyndsay and Jessica are two teenagers are about to move in with their aunt Rebecca because their mother has died. If dealing with their mother's death wasn't hard enough, they now have to adapt to an Amish lifestyle which is a quite hard thing to do when you are a teenager who is addicted to all sorts of electronic gadgets. Especially when many of them are electrical appliances. Both girls are scared and a little reluctant to leave their godmother behind. Jessica the oldest has the hardest time adjusting as Lyndsay is a little younger and adapting to a new environment is a bit easier to do. Jessica ends up working in her Uncle Daniel's furniture store while Lyndsay ends up working at the Kaufman bakery with Rebecca.

While Jessica struggles with all kinds of rules of being Amish, Lyndsay ends up flourishing in her new home. I really felt for Jessica as she was struggling in her new household as it's apparent that she's overall a good kid, but just not comfortable in this new environment. She yearns to be able to go back to her hometown and live but she doesn't want to leave her sister behind either. However the longer she stays with her Aunt Rebecca the more miserable she becomes.

The troubles with Jessica start to put a strain on Daniel and Rebecca as maybe their farm isn't the place for the two girls. But Rebecca really wants to make things work as God hasn't blessed her and Daniel with a kid of their own and she really likes this chance she's been given. How will this family be able to come together and what if both girls aren't meant to live with Rebecca forever?

The book also introduces you to several other characters that you will likely see in the subsequent books in the series as this is the first one. If you like Amish stories this definitely was as good as some of the other ones I've read on my .
Amy Clipston easily wins readers hearts over in "A Gift of Grace" the first book in The Kauffman Amish Bakery Series. Daniel and Rebecca Kauffman are a married Amish couple with no children who are suddenly surprised when they are suddenly thrust into parenthood due to very sad family circumstances. Rebecca's sister Grace is an Englisher who left the Amish faith years ago. Grace and her husband are suddenly killed in a car accident and their teenage daughters Jessica and Lindsay are sent by Grace's instructions upon death to live with their mom's sister Rebecca and her husband Daniel. As an Englisher Jessica has a hard time adjusting to living and obeying the Amish lifestyle. Lindsay adjusts a little easier. Rebecca and Daniel, new to having children question their abilities to raise these girls right and to the standards that would make Grace and her husband happy. This is not only a very trying time for Jessica and Lindsay, it is also very trying for Rebecca and Daniel. Will this new formed family be able to adjust or will they bust before they get a chance to fully know one another? Will Rebecca and Daniel's marriage survive? You must read Amy Clipston's "A Gift of Grace" to find out.
